Recycling

The Intermunicipal Relations Committee, IRC, is a Council of Governments formed by the City of Altoona, Logan Township, and Hollidaysburg Borough.  The IRC oversees the curbside and commercial recycling programs in the three member municipalities and educates residents and business about recycling in Blair County.  The staff coordinates the efforts between the three municipalities, trash haulers, and processing facilities in our area to grow a successful recycling program.

Logan Township homeowners, apartment tenants and business managers are reminded that state law and local ordinances require all residents and commercial/institutional establishments to separate recyclable materials from the solid waste stream and properly prepare them for recycling. Those not in compliance with recycling regulations may be subject to fines of up to $1,000 per violation.

Materials that Logan Township residents must recycle at their curbside include: aluminum cans, steel ("tin") cans, clear, green and brown glass bottles and jars, #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs only, newspapers, magazines and catalogs, junk mail and mixed office paper. Logan Township commercial and institutional establishments must recycle all of these items in addition to corrugated cardboard.  Establishments should make arrangements with their waste collector to establish a recycling program or contact the Recycling Office at 942-7472.

It is paramount that recyclables are prepared properly before being placed at the curb. Materials that are not prepared correctly may have to be discarded due to contamination. In order to be sure that all recyclable materials are collected for recycling, there are a few simple steps that should be followed. Plastic bottles and jugs, as well as glass bottles and jars must be rinsed of their contents. Steel cans should also be rinsed clean. All lids should be discarded. Newspapers and phone books should be bundled or placed in a brown paper bag. All other paper recyclables should be bundled or placed in a separate brown paper bag.  Please keep all paper recycling dry.  All corrugated cardboard should be flattened.  For more information visit the website at www.ircenvironment.org.

The IRC staff is housed at Altoona City Hall, 1301 12th Street, Altoona and can be contacted by phone at 814-942-7472 or email at education@ircenvironment.org.
